‘Hidden Underworld’
Fundamentally intertwined with negative connotations of vandalism and graffiti , “Hidden Underworld” depicts grungy graffiti tags brashly emblazoned on the reverse side of an already completed canvas; referencing the art form’s nature of concealment and irreverent placement together with ‘barbed wire’. The skateboard represents the rebellious ones who passionately pursue their graffiti art and as a means for a quick getaway when warranted.
This artwork was exhibited at the 2022 Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art for the Brisbane Metropolitan area and can be seen here.
For the Creative Generation exhibition, I also added two clay rats. The audience is left to ponder whether the rats are just another grimy element or are they symbolic of vandals/graffiti artists living and creating in the netherworld?
