This portrait of Vincent van Gogh was born from a deep admiration for his work and a personal connection to the struggles he faced with depression. His life, marked by brilliance and sorrow, resonates with my own journey as an artist striving to turn emotion into colour and expression. I wanted to honour his enduring influence while capturing both the brilliance and the sorrow that shaped him.
Using Van Gogh’s signature yellows and blues, I incorporated textures reminiscent of Starry Night, allowing his expressive brushwork to echo through my own painting. His thoughtful gaze and subtly sad eyes reflect the sadness that accompanied him, while the brown coat jacket hints at the cold Dutch landscape and the era he lived in. Bright blue highlights on his hair, face, and shirt introduce a contemporary touch, blending past and present in a dialogue of colour and light.
Through this portrait, I reflect on Van Gogh’s life and times, celebrate his extraordinary artistry as one of the greatest modern artists and explore how his vibrant colourways and emotional intensity continue to inspire my own creative journey.
