Picasso Story

This portrait of Pablo Picasso was inspired by the story of his dachshund, Lump—his muse and closest companion for sixteen years. Lump inspired many of Picasso’s works, and his death left the artist in profound grief for just 10 days before his own death. This story resonated with me, revealing Picasso not just as a legend of modern art, but as a man defined by love and loss.

Painted in a black and white palette, I used chiaroscuro—echoing the techniques of da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Vermeer—to capture the weight of that grief through dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. I imagined Picasso smoking in his final days, the drifting smoke curling into the air like his famous line drawings—a fleeting reminder of both his genius and his humanity.

Through this portrait, I am exploring my own fascination with the hidden, emotional lives of the figures I admire—bringing to canvas the vulnerability and intensity that first drew me to art itself.
